Dal Dhokli- A Perfect Sumptuous Meal

 

Dal dhokli is a great wholesome meal. It is a perfect combination of spiced whole wheat flour dumplings in a pot of simmering dal. Dal-dhokli is a complete hassle-free meal full of nutrients.

 For Gujarati style dal dhokli, prepare it in tuar dal and make it sweet and savory. If you like to give it a spicy and savory twist, then prepare dhokli in mixed dal which comprises of moong dal, tuar dal, and urad dal. Also, add split green grams (chilke wali moong dal) and split black grams (chilke wali urad dal). 

 

Ingredients

For The Dhoklis (Dumplings)

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp besan (chick pea/ gram flour)
  • 1 tbsp sooji
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1/4 tsp of coriander seeds (slightly crushed)
  • 1/4 tsp of garam masala powder
  • salt to taste

 

For The Dal

  • 1 cup uncooked tuar (arhar) dal
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
  • 2 sprigs of curry leaves
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida (Hing)
  • 2 tsp Tamarind paste
  • 3 tbsp jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • salt to taste
  • few leaves of freshly chopped coriander

 

Preparation

For the dhoklis (Dumplings)

  • Mix all the ingredients in a big bowl and use water to knead it to make a firm dough.

 

 

  • Divide the dough into round balls and roll out each into chapatis.
  • Cut each chapati into the diamond shape.

 

 

  • In a big heavy bottomed vessel, boil water, add little oil and add dhoklis one by one (if put together then it will form a lump) and let it cook.

 

 

For the dal

  • Wash dal thoroughly and then pressure cook it with enough water.

 

 

  • Now for tempering, heat oil in a kadhai, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, bay leaf, green chilies, clove, and cinnamon. Mix well and saute on medium flame. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder and add little water. Cook it on low flame till oil separates.

 

 

  • Add dal to this tempering and add tamarind and jaggery and let it boil.
  • Now add cooked dhokli to the dal along with required amount of water. Dal dhokli should be of medium consistency.
  • Let dal dhokli simmer on low flame for 5 – 10 min and keep on stirring.
  • Add lemon juice and coriander.

 

 

Serve it hot with chopped onions and tomatoes.
